Pro bono at York University
- 26th January 2011
Law students at York Law School Clinic at the University of York are offering free legal advice to the local community as part of their LLB program.
Student advisers, who are studying law at the university, are advising on legal problems including setting up a business, employment problems and claiming benefits.
The Clinic, based at the law school, gives students the chance to gain practical experience in advising on the law and put legal theory into practice. The clinic is open to anyone in York and the surrounding area and the advice is free and confidential. The student advisers interview clients, look into their legal concerns and consult with professional lawyers before giving their clients appropriate advice.
Richard Grimes, a solicitor and the University's Director of Clinical Programmes, says: “The clinic provides an opportunity for the students to gain experience and put theory into practice. At the same time it offers a free and professional service focusing on areas where people may find it difficult to find or afford other legal services.
“We aim to hit the standards required of any solicitor and everything the clinic does is overseen by experienced staff. We cannot guarantee to help in every case but if we can, we will.”
