Pro bono at Hull
- 24th February 2010
A pro bono clinic has been launched this month at the University of Hull to help hard-up law students and to provide the public with a legal service.
The university’s Legal Advice Centre is the first ever at the university and law students will be offering legal services to the public under the supervision of tutors with advice being offered on issues including welfare, benefits, housing, debt advice and consumer rights.
Initially, the pro bono project will be a voluntary module for existing students and will go on to become an assessed element of the degree programme. Head of the law clinic, Frank Dignan, says: “This is the first time the university has offered such a service and after months of preparation we’re all looking forward to the clinic opening its doors and welcoming our first clients.”
The first tranche will comprise 24 students who will work in groups to deal with clients’ problems. The clinic will be working in partnership with local and other organisations including the Hull Community Legal Advice Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau and local councils and law firms.
