Oxford may charge £9,000
- 11th February 2011
Universities could charge as much as £9,000 per year with Oxford set to be the first to charge the maximum level.
Oxford’s Pro-vice chancellor Tony Monaco said Oxford needs to charge students at least £8,000. However, students argue that poorer applicants will be put off.
Some top university figures at Oxford argue that such a high level of fee was necessary when the university was facing substantial cuts to its budget. However, a £3,000 fee waiver could be available for the least financially able students. It is understood Cambridge University is also planning on charging £9,000 for all its undergraduate courses.
But the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, has warned Oxbridge that it is not up to them to decide whether they can charge up to £9,000 fees. He also said they had to dramatically increase access for poor students.
