Oxbridge favoured by magic circle
- 26th March 2010
Oxbridge graduates make up more than a third of the trainees taken on by magic circle firms, according to recent research by Legal Week.
The weekly law publication’s survey looked at the educational background of trainees at magic circle firms and found 38% of them studied at Oxford or Cambridge Universities. At city firms, 20% of trainees were from Oxbridge.
Legal Week says 46% of trainees at Slaughter & May were from Oxbridge with 44% at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. While just 11.7% of trainees at magic circle firms went to a university that was outside the UK’s top 20, 48% of all recruits in national and regional firm came from outside the top 20.
A spokesman at leading city firm Lovells said the firm “actively targets Oxford and Cambridge universities because it is likely that we will find a large number of candidates who fulfil our academic criteria”.
