  • Number of training contracts at top firms shrinks

  • 29th October 2010
  • The numbers of training contracts offered by the top 30 UK firms has gone down by 11% in the last three years, according to research undertaken by Legal Week.

  • The research looked at graduate recruitment trends at 27 top firms and Linklaters came out as the firm securing the most applications for training contracts.  The survey revealed that applicants had only a 3% chance of success of securing a training contract at the firms that took part in the research.

On average, firms received 35 applications for every training contract on offer this year and figures reveal that the overall success rate of potential trainees’ applications fell from an average of 3.2% to 2.9% since 2008.

The survey revealed a wide disparity as to which firms were popular with aspiring solicitors, with Linklaters receiving twice as many applications as Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in each of the last three years.  Freshfields recruitment partner Simon Johnson explained to Legal Week: “Our application process is not an easy one - it comprises a verbal reasoning test and a detailed application form. We are happy with the fact that students have to commit time to the process.”
