Northumbria/Irwin Mitchell partnership
- 01st March 2010
A new partnership between Northumbria Law School and national law firm Irwin Mitchell has just been announced, piloting a ground-breaking scheme training future lawyers.
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has approved Northumbria to provide a law degree combining undergraduate legal education with the LPC and the SRA’s new Work Based Learning pilot. The partnership with Irwin Mitchell is one result of the SRA initiative which pilots work-based learning, a new approach to the traditional training contracts.
The Dean of Northumbria’s Law School says: “The MLaw (Solicitor) degree is the first law degree of its kind and will see students starting as undergraduates and graduating with the education and training requirements which will make them eligible to join the roll of solicitors.”
He says students will experience law “for real” under the supervision of lecturers who are practicing law and existing training providers. He adds: “We are also working closely with other firms in the North East to provide a range of placement opportunities”.
The Master of Law (Solicitor) degree is a fully integrated degree combining the academic, vocational and training stages of qualification as a solicitor. The full-time five year degree course enables graduates to apply to the SRA for enrolment as a solicitor. However, numbers are strictly limited and currently include only those studying on Northumbria’s existing degree course.
