Nick Clegg calls on legal industry to open its doors
- 12th October 2011
Nick Clegg gave a speech at the Financial Services Lawyers Association dinner earlier this week to encourage the legal profession to open its doors to new talent and increase opportunities for a wider section of society.
Nick stated that “70% of high court judges and 68% of top barristers are privately educated. More than half of solicitors attended independent schools. Only one in four partners (solicitors working in private practice) are women. Nine out of ten QCs are men. Nineteen out of twenty are white.”
He claimed that the legal profession had made progress, referencing the Institute of Legal Executives as one area where becoming a qualified lawyer is open to all, however he urged the legal industry to open their doors wider.
