  • New US inroad into London market

  • 25th August 2010
  • US firm Ropes & Gray is preparing to take on law graduates at its London office for the first time.

  • As the firm continues to expand its UK presence, it is expecting to consolidate its growth with the launch a formal graduate recruitment programme next year and is understood to be currently in talks with the Law Society and major UK universities as it lays the groundwork for the programme.

The firm, whose practice focuses primarily on finance and restructuring, made its London practice permanent in 2009 and now has six partners and 17 associates.  Joint London office head Mike Goetz told LegalWeek.com: “We have undertaken some of the initial legwork, but it is a long drawn-out process and it will take a while until the recruitment becomes integral to the firm.”

Meanwhile, the American Bar Association (ABA) is to consider proposals to accredit foreign law schools after a committee of US law professors, lawyers, judges and law deans set up in June recommended whether foreign law schools should be allowed to seek ABA accreditation.

“Such an expansion would provide additional guidance for state supreme courts when lawyers trained outside the US seek to be allowed to sit for a US Bar examination,” the committee said in its recent report.
