New Pro Bono Scheme from NTU
- 29th June 2010
The student law society at Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University today released plans for a new approach to legal community activities.
Their pro-bono project called Myths and Mock Trials is believed to be the first of its kind and shows a new and innovative approach to the street law programme.
Members of the society will be going into local schools dispelling misconceptions within the legal profession and providing students with an insight to the law through mock trials.
Christopher Kerr, President of the Law Society at Nottingham Trent says, “Our survey suggested that young students had many misconceptions about the legal sector. One of many astounding statistics showed that 90% of regional students believed that non RP accents would prevent them from obtaining a career in the legal profession. We hope that this scheme will inform students of the real requirements of a legal career whilst at the same time dispelling any factors that are not in fact barriers at all."
Nick Johnson, Principal Lecturer with responsibility for pro bono, says, “I think this programme will be welcomed on all sides and something Nottingham Law School supports wholeheartedly. It is important that students leave school with at least some idea of how the law operates and this scheme is an excellent attempt at addressing some of the current deficiencies."
