LSB to ask about parents’ education
- 16th February 2011
The Legal Services Board (LSB) is set to ask lawyers about their parents’ education in an effort to monitor and increase mobility in the legal profession, under far-reaching proposals.
Lawyers are to be asked whether their parents attended university in view of the imminent Equality Act due to come into force in April and under which regulators will be required to consider the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and advance equality of opportunity.
Under the LSB’s recent consultation document ‘Increasing Diversity and Social Mobility in the Legal Workforce: Transparency and Evidence’ the LSB will be undertaking the largest diversity survey in the profession.
The document reveals that lawyers will be also be asked about other issues including their sexuality, religion and any disabilities. The profession has generally welcomed the proposals as a necessity to enhance the profession. A team of academics has also been commissioned by the LSB to produce a survey of the legal profession and its approach to encourage greater diversity.
