Legal Services Board chief calls for shorter training period
- 24th November 2010
The chair of the Legal Services Board says that because of rising levels of debt the length of time students spend learning needs to be reduced.
Speaking at the recent Lord Upjohn lecture, David Edmonds said that with the increase in tuition fees, students should spend less time in education to avoid making costly investment decisions before they get a real feel for the area of practice they choose.
Edmonds, who does not support plans for aptitude tests for the LPC, suggested combining professional training with full time employment at commercial firms as trainee accountants do.
Meanwhile, the main three legal regulators, the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Bar Standards Board and the Institute of Legal Executives Professional Standards, announced a full-scale review of legal education and training, which is strongly backed by Edmonds.
