Law students prefer tuition fees to graduate tax
- 20th October 2010
Law students say they would rather pay higher tuition fees to fund their university degree than pay a graduate tax later.
Two thirds of law students surveyed by the College of Law (CoL) in its annual survey of its students say they would prefer higher tuition fees, and agree that cuts to public spending are necessary to reduce the country’s economic difficulties.
The survey, carried out in conjunction with The Times newspaper, was carried out among all students on the CoL’s GDL, LPA and BPTC last month and asked for their views on career aspirations, student debt, government cuts, leisure and their use of social media. More than 2,000 responses were received, out of which only a quarter also say they would be prepared to pay more than £5,000 a year in tuition fees.
And the survey revealed that students’ earning expectations have also gone down since last year; and average student debt has risen over the past year.
