Law society survey reveals diversity concerns
- 19th November 2010
Women, and black and ethnic minority (BME) lawyers are continuing to face problems in the legal profession, according to Law Society research just published.
The results report a general improvement in attitudes to lesbian and gay lawyers within the profession.
Last year, the Society undertook three surveys, all of which revealed similar concerns which highlighted the need to address issues concerning equality and diversity. The research highlights that law firms need to address these barriers that persist to realise the full potential of their workforces.
Female solicitors are revealed to be victims of outdated perceptions of women, resistance to contemporary management practices such as flexible working, and perceptions of client expectations which meant the legal sector was still very male dominated.
And many BME lawyers felt ill-informed when entering the profession with some claiming they felt they were expected to be grateful for any position or pay offered.
