Law Soc commissions report into paralegal qualification
- 21st July 2010
The Law Society is to consider whether it should develop or endorse qualifications specifically for paralegals. The Society has commissioned a report into the issue in the light of the expanding paralegal market and where aspiring lawyers are trying to practice law through alternative means.
Law Society President Bob Heslett said: “This is particularly important when there are more paralegals in the market and when, given the Milburn agenda, people are looking for recognised ways of entering the profession. We want to see whether there is a demand for this among solicitors. In respect of advocacy, solicitor advocates are here to stay and we believe they provide important additional choice and competition in the market. The Society wants to support them and help them achieve the highest standards”.
In March this year, a report by the government-sponsored thinktank the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, revealed that the number of paralegals has doubled in the last decade and is expected to rise further.
