  • Law Lecturer under Restraining Order

  • 22nd June 2011
  • Stephen Thacker, senior lecturer at Bristol Law School at the University of the West of England (UWE), had been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on wife Lorna on January 26 last year. He denied the charge and a trial was set to get under way at Gloucester Crown Court.

  • Judge William Hart said, "You are a professional man and it is a source of sadness to see a man such as you standing where you do. I am confident that the dock of this or any other Crown Court will never see you again. I don't know what the consequences will be so far as your professional position is in the future but I hope that may be resolved in a way which doesn't deprive you of the profession in which you have taken part for so many years."

The Judge imposed an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting his wife except through lawyers and banning him from going within 200 metres of her address.
