Harvard law student wins Google Buzz settlement
- 08th September 2010
A law student at Harvard Law School who launched a class action privacy lawsuit against Google Buzz, for sharing personal data without user content has won an $8.5m settlement from Google.
Eva Hibnick, 24, received an email offering her Buzz, the new Google social networking service. She was not interested and clicked ‘no’ – but her instruction was ignored by Google and her email contacts were included on public Buzz profiles when it was launched in February.
It is understood the settlement money will be donated to internet privacy groups. Google has also pledged to “undertake wider public education about the privacy aspects of Buzz”.
