Graduate unemployment hits 17-year peak
- 03rd November 2010
The numbers of unemployed graduates has reached its highest level in 17 years, according to recent research undertaken by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU).
It reveals more than 21,000 graduates from 2009 were without work in January 2010.
The rate of employment rose by a percentage point amid concerns about the impact of public sector cuts. Charlie Ball, deputy research director at HECSU, says: “Prospects for graduates in the short-term look brighter, with unemployment, as a result of the downturn, likely to have peaked and next year we expect to see a decline. However, with the anticipated public sector job cuts the future in the medium-term looks less clear.”
Individuals securing graduate level jobs fell 3.3 percentage points but salaries have continued to rise, albeit marginally. The mean salary available to graduates if currently £19,695, a £18 increase since 2009.
