  • Graduate tax unlikely

  • 25th August 2010
  • David Willets, the Universities Minister who was a proponent of the graduate tax now says a ‘full blown’ tax on graduates is unlikely.

  • However, he says the government is still looking at alternative ways in which graduates can make further contribution to the cost of their studies.

Mr Willets has said that for too long Britain had "all its eggs in one basket" with a focus on full-time university courses and "we need to invest in alternatives".  He says students disappointed with their A’level results could also "add something extra to their CV to increase their chance of getting a place at university next year".

And he denied claims that competition for university places had been worsened by the Government's decision to fund only half of 20,000 extra university places promised by Labour in the run-up to the election saying Labour did not properly fund it.  He said: “My view is we have delivered on our consistent commitment throughout for 10,000 extra places.”
