Graduate jobs unfilled but graduates lack confidence
- 23rd June 2010
Half of graduate employers have not filled their graduate vacancies, according to a survey by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR), with more than 40% of them planning to increase their graduate intake this year.
But despite this, 42% of 1,500 students surveyed by the AGR for TARGETjobs Breakfast News event did not have the confidence that they would secure a job after they graduated with 18% indicating that they planned to take up postgraduate study because of the recession.
Chris Phillips, UK publishing director at TARGETjobs.co.uk’s parent company GTI Media, said: “This just goes to show the difference between perception and reality as some students react negatively to headlines. The message is: don’t give up; there are opportunities for you.”
Last month, the CBI commissioned a survey which revealed just 6% of firms will impose a complete freeze on graduate recruitment this year representing a 38% decrease on last year. And just one in 20 firms is not recruiting at all compared to 66% last year. The news is good but students are clearly taking some convincing.
