  • Good news for ethnic minorities

  • 13th January 2010
  • A new diversity league table has revealed a decrease in the number of trainees from ethnic minorities (EM) in the past year.  However, the results, published by the Black Solicitors Network, reveal that the number of EM trainees have increased since 2007 (up 13.58% to 10.65%).

  • Weil, Gotshal & Manges is singled out with 34% EM trainees, with Latham & Watkins and Flint Bishop also named in joint second place with 33.33%.  Forty-nine law firms took part in the survey which also examined gender statistics.  Thompson Solicitors, a personal injury firm, has proved itself the most diverse firm in the UK.

The Black Solicitors Network is the leading body representing the interests of existing and aspiring black solicitors in the UK.

Cordella Bart-Stewart, Chair of the Black Solicitors Network said: “The importance of the Diversity League Table is that it leads to greater transparency, and to the ability to identify issues and contribute to the debate on identifying solutions. As can be seen in the report, much good work is being done however; there is still a long way to go. In a global economy, no profession can afford to be complacent until all its members are treated fairly and have equal access to opportunities regardless of their class, race, gender or any other factor.”
