Give greater consumer rights to undergraduates, says Mandelson
- 13th November 2009
Undergraduates should be given fuller details about the quality of teaching, time with tutors and the work expected of them, says Business Secretary Lord Mandelson on announcing a 10-year plan.
He suggested that universities must improve students’ experience if they are to charge higher fees. And vice-chancellors would be given responsibility for collaborating with businesses on more practical research and focus on employability.
But Mandelson warned that public spending on higher education faced “constraints” meaning that students, as well as businesses, may have to pay a higher contribution towards their education. He has also commissioned a review of access programmes amid renewed demands that universities should admit more students from poor backgrounds.
