  • Foreign lawyers fees treble for QLTS

  • 05th October 2010
  • Foreign lawyers wanting to qualify in England must now undertake the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) - and face paying more than three times as much as under the old regime.

  • Kaplan Law School, the sole assessor for the Scheme, is to charge £3,230 compared to the £800 fee under the old QLTT.

Kaplan’s managing director Peter Anderson said: “The QLTS represents a step change when benchmarked against the QLTT that preceded it. It’s inevitable that such an extensive range of assessments, necessary to produce valid and reliable results that adequately protect the consumer and the standards of the profession, is more expensive than its predecessor.”

However, Nigel Savage, chief executive of the College of Law, says the inflated cost is “the downside of regulators dispensing monopoly provision”.  He says legal education and training should be subject to competitive forces.
