English universities most expensive
- 08th October 2010
English students could end up paying more for their degrees that anywhere else in the world if annual fees top £5,000, according to research published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The conclusion comes just days before the report of Lord Browne’s inquiry into student finance is expected. The publication of his final report is expected within the next two weeks and it is thought it will recommend doubling the fees to £7000 a year.
According to the Independent newspaper, Iceland has the highest average fee for a public degree course at £4,072 followed by the US at £3,572 per year. Universities in England charge £3,240 a year.
Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, says England has much to be proud of when it comes to higher education. But she added: “However, we do not want to be the most expensive country in the world for domestic students to do a degree.
“Students have been contributing more and more to the cost of a degree over recent years and now is the time to explore other options. If the forthcoming review of university funding by Lord Browne just lists the way to squeeze more money out of students and their families then it will have spectacularly failed its remit.”
