Disillusioned graduates
- 31st March 2010
A disillusioned generation of employees is being created, made up of graduates working in careers that are unrelated to their degree subject.
Graduate unemployment levels created by the unstable jobs market is forcing more and more graduates to work in professions not relevant to their degree, according to a survey for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) by YouGov.
The results reveal that 59% of employees surveyed were not employed in work related to their degree. Most said this was because they could not find a suitable job and 28% said their degree did not equip them with the skills required for the workplace. A quarter of those surveyed had decided to postpone the start of their careers.
The Government has pledged to significantly increase the number of young people they want to reach a degree or equivalent qualification.
