CoL’s Nigel Savage
- 02nd March 2011
Nigel Savage, chief executive of the College of Law, has called for an updated law degree.
Writing in The Lawyer¸ Savage says the review of legal services education is of paramount importance if UK lawyers are to be competitive in today’s global marketplace. Calling for an updated LLB, he says: “Many traditional undergraduate LLB law degrees have become increasingly divorced from the profession and do not focus on society’s need for lawyers able to solve clients’ problems.”
The major review, announced by the three main legal regulators – the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the Bar Standards Board (BSB) and the Institute of Legal Executives Professional Standards (IPS) – will look in-depth at the education and training in the legal profession. Savage says responding to the global issues is “an exciting prospect” and those in education “need to build on the huge success of the UK’s law firms and bar in global markets”. He says it will be a great mistake if the education and training review fails to take this into account.
