CoL wins mooting competition
- 12th February 2010
The College of Law has won a major mooting competition, winning £150 and a week-long mini-pupillage for each of the two winners. They will also receive a week’s subscription for Weekly Law Reports after winning the final of the 10th Inter-Varsity Mooting Competition.
The BPTC students, Mevlude Akay, 22, and Thomas Evans, 25, demonstrated their winning ability to argue compellingly and think on their feet beating off competition from 19 teams nationwide. They had to compete in five rounds debating human rights issues involving a minor being charged with sexual relations with another minor.
The Inter-varsity mooting competition is organised by the Inner Temple Mooting Society on behalf of the Inner Temple with judges including legal academics as well as practicing barristers.
Thomas, one of the winning mooters, said: “Mooting provides an invaluable opportunity to build up your confidence in public speaking, but most importantly it allows you to share your ideas with someone else and learn from that experience. I was especially lucky to be partnered with Mevlude Akay, who is not only extremely talented, but always good-natured in the face of adversity, and a constant pleasure to work with.”
Mooting is an important extracurricular activity which many laws schools undertake. It involves simulating court proceedings in which students take on the roles of judge, jury, counsel for prosecution and defence and so on. Frequently, real-life lawyers are invited to take part.
