  • CoL to offer 2-year LLB

  • 26th January 2011
  • The College of Law is launching a two-year LLB law degree, the first of its kind with an emphasis on practical learning.

  • The new course will focus on improving students’ employment prospects and practical legal skills by being grounded in practice-based vocational learning.  The degree will be a move away from the traditional academic based law degree and will, says the CoL, have ‘at its heart’ the teaching of essential practical skills including drafting and research, analysis and problem solving.

The course will include workshops to help students understand and make the most of the careers opportunities available at home and abroad.  The two-year LLB will involve 11 hours of face-to-face teaching each week.  It will feature a choice of two specific routes for students – one focusing on law and the individual; the other on law and businesses.

The new course is due to start in September 2012 at the CoL in Chester, Birmingham and London.  The CoL aims to expand the program to all its UK locations in due course.  The CoL’s chief executive, Nigel Savage, says: “Our new LLB is a natural extension of our existing activities and an essential part of our vision of being a world-class professional law school.

“The legal services market in the UK and globally is currently undergoing huge transformation and growth bringing great employment opportunities. Modern lawyers now need to be self-reliant, client-focussed problem-solvers and our LLB is unique in that it will equip students with the right knowledge and skills to succeed in these markets.”
