City firms favour public school students
- 17th November 2010
City law firms are persisting in recruiting students who were educated in public schools, according to recent research.
Recruitment consultants Laurence Simons, revealed that 15% of lawyers under the age of 39 at London’s leading firms were educated at public school, indicating a preference over state secondary schools.
The information was obtained by an analysis of the profiles of 49,600 lawyers on the business-networking website LinkedIn. Out of these, a total of 7,200 had attended public school.
Jason Horobin, director at Laurence Simons, said social exclusivity was rife in the legal profession in the City in spite of a drive to increase diversity within the profession. With just 3% of the general population attending a public school, the research suggests the legal profession remains elitist.
