Call for barristers to stop calling themselves a referral profession
- 18th November 2009
Leading barrister Anthony Spaeight QC has called for the barristers’ profession to stop calling itself a “referral profession” and instead call themselves the “the legal profession’s specialist branch”.
Mr Spaeight, a commercial barrister at 4 Pump Court, was speaking to delegates at last week’s annual Bar Conference, saying that barristers are concealing the “most important characteristics and qualities of the Bar”.
In a controversial speech, he said: “Disposing of the image of the Bar as a referral profession and launching the concept of it as a specialist profession might assist both barristers and the public in the development of new ways of supplying cheaper legal services.”
Barristers are the specialist lawyers within the legal profession.
