  • Business should stay out of Facebook

  • 27th January 2010
  • Employers should not use social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace to snoop on students by accessing their profiles, says three-quarters of students polled by a Graduate Recruitment Bureau (GRB) graduate survey.  They say it is tantamount to an invasion of privacy.

  • The students say it is their private space and a private activity, and businesses and potential employees have no right to check up on them through these sites. However, the students who said they would not mind said that as they had nothing to hide, there was nothing to worry about.

Dan Hawes is the co-founder of GRB and said graduates identify a clear division between their private life and employment:  “Social media is a relatively new phenomenon and many recruiters of graduates are unsure of how to relate to it. Attractive as it may be to some employers to use social networking sites as a resource to find out more about candidates, or to reach out to them, the results of this survey show that a significant majority of students and graduates disapprove of the practice.”

The GRB is a free service specialising in helping students and graduates in all subject find the best available graduate jobs with career prospects.
