  • BPTC students are “not up to it”: Deech

  • 02nd March 2011
  • The chair of the Bar Standards Board (BSB) Baroness Deech is reported to have said that many aspiring lawyers taking the BPTC are “wasting their money” and are not up to it.

  • The Law Society Gazette reports her as saying: “There are too many people on the course who shouldn’t be there. We need to give a signal to those who aren’t up to it that they’re wasting their money.”

She was speaking in an attempt to address the current mismatch between the number of aspiring barristers graduating from the BPTC and the relative low number of pupillages available.  She is also concerned at the huge sums of money being spent by students with little prospect of a job at the end of it.

In 2010, according to BSB figures there were around 1,400 students studying on the BPTC, with just 478 pupillages available.
