“BPTC places should be slashed”
- 23rd February 2011
The number of Bar Professional Training Course places should be restricted, the former Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer has said.
He believes a restriction is necessary to close the gap between law graduates and the limited number of pupillage places on offer.
Lord Falconer was speaking at a seminar on the future of legal education at Inner Temple chambers. He said: “Ultimately the crushed hopes of so many after the expenditure of over £50,000 are not good for the profession. We would rightly be accused of leading people on in a way, which is not necessary for the well being of the profession.”
He also called on the Bar to increase the number of pupillages saying it will increase the pool who have the additional experience strengthening their arm in the job market. His remarks come at a time when the main legal regulators are about to start a major review into the legal education and training regime.
