BPPs new work experience scheme
- 17th March 2010
BPP has unveiled a new ‘revolutionary’ scheme to boost the work experience of its GDL students.
The scheme is available for those studying on the GDL at BPP Law School in Manchester and Leeds in September and aims to give students transferable skills crucial to real legal work. Issues to be focussed on include oral communication skills, team work, client care and commercial awareness.
The BPP cites a CBI report that says many students who take part in work experience placements do not receive an initial briefing, or specific learning objectives set and nor do they receive feedback. BPP is attempting to change this with its new scheme in which students will receive support from local lawyers on how to get the most from their placement, and a follow up workshop on using it to its full effects. Students will also get advice on how to prepare for formal vacation placements and training contract applications.
Peter Crisp, Chief Executive of BPP Law School says: “There is no doubt that work experience is a prime way for budding lawyers to get ahead of the job queue, but many education institutions and employers have been slow to catch on. By guaranteeing placements, we can ensure our students who have no previous work experience have something tangible to put on their CV. And, by designing the scheme so that participants get all the support they need, students are more prepared and therefore more 'useful' and actually add value when they attend firms for their work placement.”
