Blue Chip companies refusing interviews on GCSE results
- 30th October 2009
Blue Chip companies are using the UCAS points system to discriminate between potential employees and refusing them interviews based on GCSE results. Some graduates may have top degree results but are being denied an interview if their GCSE and A-level results are below par.
According to the Daily Telegraph, major firms such as Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PriceWaterhouseCoopers are using UCAS points to discriminate between candidates. However, UCAS says the system was never designed to “reflect the skills needed by employers”. Some graduates are claiming that the recruitment policy discriminates against them from the age of 16.
It could prove difficult to stop companies taking this stance. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills reportedly said: “It is not our place to comment on how companies employ graduates, as long as no laws are broken”.
