  • Big increase in university applications

  • 11th February 2010
  • University applications have increased by 23% since last year, according to the university admissions service UCAS.  The increase swells the competition for available places this Autumn.

  • The figures come hot on the heels of last week’s revelation by funding chiefs that there will be 6,000 fewer places for the forthcoming academic year and universities facing cuts of £449m.

The latest increase in applications is the fourth in a row recorded by UCAS.  UCAS says it will be a "very challenging and competitive" year while university leaders warn that many of the brightest teenagers will be forced straight into the dole queue.

The increase is down to a number of factors including students re-applying after being rejected last year and, significantly, a rise in applications from mature students seeking a return to education after losing their jobs.

Law courses will not escape the pressure, meaning that the competition aspiring lawyers face now starts earlier than ever with students competing for fewer places on undergraduate law degrees.
