A third of students may miss out on university this year
- 07th January 2011
Nearly 230,000 students could miss out on university this year as students rush to avoid higher tuition fees.
By Christmas 344,000 candidates had applied for the next academic year – a record number of applications at such an early stage according to Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas).
With tuition fees set to rise by nearly three times their current rate in 2012, students are desperate to beat the increase which could see fees reaching as much as £9,000 a year. Aspiring law students will also face the prospect of continuing course fees to pay out after their degrees.
Many students are also abandoning their plans to take a gap year to start their undergraduate courses in 2011. Ucas believes that if the current trend continues, a third of applicants could miss out on a place.
