Hi there, I’m new to this site so just thought I’d start a little topic to see what everyone thinks.
Im at Northumbria Uni doing their new M-Law Exempting degree, which includes the LLB, LLM and LPC/BVC (depeneding on which you choose.)
In year 2 we have to choose from 4 options of degrees;
1) Complete a 3 year degree in which you just graduate with a LLB
2) Complete a 5 year degree, with LLB, LLM AND LPC
4) Complete a 4 year degree with LLB and BVC
5) Complete a 4 year degree with LLM and LPC
Well it depends on whether you wish to practice at the Bar or not, thus LPC or BVC (which should read BPTC now). And the LLM is internationally recognised so is a big plus.
Given the choice i’d do 2) probably, and if not then 4) if wanting a quicker option.
However, you could just do the 3 year degree then do the LLM, LPC, BPTC post grad anyways.
Im leaning more towards the 5year degree simply because of the qualifications you get at the end and it does work out a lot cheaper, we don’t pay extra for the LLM (apart from obviously paying to be at uni an extra year or so) and we’ve started paying for the LPC/BVC now, we pay 900 a year each year that we are here.
By the way, what does the new name for the BVC mean?
If your sure thats what you wish to persue then it sounds pretty good, as by the sounds of it means youve definetly got the place to do the LPC and LLM. Is that 900 a year each year for the 5 years? Thus 4500, then tuition on top?
Bloody good question mclean! I’d have to opt for option 5 on that, so long as you choose a good LLM (in other words, an LLM that relates to the work of the employer you seek to work for).
In fact, saying that, I can’t imagine many 17 year olds having much of an idea on which area of law and which firm they want to work for. If you do though, definitely the best option.
What’s Northumbria like anyway Mclean? And newcastle? I heard it’s a great student city!
Im not sure what type of law i want to do just yet, although I think Id enjoy Family. By the way - Im nearly 21 - not 17! Im a late starter! lol.
Northumbria is good, brand new buildings so its very clean and modern, cant say the same for newcastle though im afraid, but maybes thats because ive lived in newcastle all my life.
Hey, I’m in the same situation (at Northumbria) and trying to decide which route I want to go down. Apparently we have to decide by January too…bit soon :S
Personally, I would go with option 4 or 5, depending on whether you want to be a solicitor or a barrister. I don’t see the point of an LLM unless:
1) It’s in an area you’re sure you want to practice in or
2) It’s from a top uni, which Northumbria is not (the Times ranks it 45th for law and 64 overall) or
3) You’re trying to make up for a 2.2 in your first degree result—and probably not even then
Otherwise, an LLM is just a waste of a year and some money.
