Aren’t Law Societies just for try hards?
Posted: 12 October 2009 09:46 AM

What’s the point in wasting all your time being in the law society? Do firms really care… i doubt it.

Most of the top firms take on loads of non-law graduates - do you think they were in the law society.

I rest my case. smile

Of course they care. It’s not the fact that you are in the Law Society per se, but rather the type of person you are.

I bet they have a higher proprtion of good candidates that were members of their law society than not.

It will improve a firms perception of you.

I never saw any point in university law & bar societies. Waste of time.

However… Being on a committee helps when it comes to answering the ‘positions of responsibility’ questions on application forms. But that’s about it in my opinion.

It’s the cheapest and easiest extra for a cv you’ll ever get, you’ll have fun meet new people and maybe learn something new.

Of course, but it will depend on if your soc is actually any good. Some of them are awful and do nothing. Ours has a plethora of activities that all enhance the cv - negotiation, mooting, CI etc. Plus good links with the local profession and work experience placements as prizes for the above comps. V efficient way to flesh out a cv early on in your degree.

Wow, your society actually does stuff. Mine was an absolute waste of time!

Yer it depends on how good your society is… and it is good on the CV, but they are try hards, whether that’s a bad thing is another matter…

It might have something to do with me running it lol. It takes a huge amount of time though that I really should bs using to work and earn rent money!

Haha feel free to mock me, I am indeed - and I’m not even putting it on my cv or getting paid to do it. Must be just mere seconds before I get called a try hard.

Well, I think it’s a mistake not to put it on your CV if you are a president. :P Just don’t forget to study with all that organising.

In my earlier post I was referring to mere members of the society who join for the socials. ;)

Why are you not planning to put it on your CV Sean?! Surely if you’re putting all that effort in it’d be ridiculous not to

My election manifesto was that I wouldn’t do so - the other guys running were clearly doing it for the wrong reasons, and that was one of the promises I made in order to win. I always keep my promises.

Sean, I’m sorry, but that’s ridiculous. What are you trying to achieve by this?!

Put it on your CV, now! :)
