Training Contract Competely out of Reach
Posted: 24 August 2010 02:15 PM

We all know the generic route for becoming a solicitor but everyone I speak to - trainee/grad recruiter or otherwise is always harping on about extra curricular activities and having something to make you “STAND OUT” on you TC applcation…

So when I posed the question….. What does make you stand out??, I was astounded at the responses I heard.

Dont get me wrong I know playing football or rugby for your university sqaud is never going to cut it in todays competitive market!

But…

Hearing that (perhaps the more priviliged ones amongst us) were off trekking around the world raising money for charities, building schools in 3rd world countries, speaking 10 different languages in native fluency, were president of every society along with having a list as long as your arm of vac scheme placements whilst volunteering…Made me want to fall to the floor and cry! :/

It got me thinking what can your avergae Joe ever do (who has to work to survive at university) that will compete with those who have whatever sum of money at their disposal>>>???

Is their hope or are we kidding ourselves that law is no longer an elitist profession…...

Penny for your thoughts smile

I’ve met a fair number of lawyers in my day job and very few of them look like they were captains of cricket, etc. If you are working to finance your degree, find something in that work which is relevant to being a lawyer. Building a primary school in Botswana is only of interest to a legal recruiter if the applicant can show a link to his or her potential employability as a lawyer.
But if you make errors like writing “Is their hope…”, even if it is only in a forum post, you may be looking at the wrong profession. All recruiters can spot the smallest typo in a CV or cover letter. Legal recruiters will be especially merciless in winnowing out applications with errors, given the importance of written accuracy in legal work. Do yourself a favour and make sure you get spelling and grammar absolutely right in everything you write, then it will be second nature when you write something important.

Thanks for your response. I wrote that yesterday before I left for work (it was very rushed) but you are right they are fanatical about accuracy!

I am dead set on a career in the legal profession so its not that I have my choice of profession wrong, and I have spent the last two years of my life painstakingly getting work experience, going to legal summer schools, I am a member of my university mooting team, am involved with Westlaw, and I generally just doing anything and everything I can to make myself seem like a worthy contender.

My point in this thread was to illustarte the fact that it is well known that there are more law students/LPC graduates than there are training contract posts and so what can those people in my siuation do to make legal recruiters look at us if we are not at oxford/cambridge/UCL and so on?? Firms are always first to say that they recruit from “diverse” ad differing backgrounds -  but is this true if you are not at the top ten universities in the UK??

Whilst Im sure you meant well stating getting a part time job that not only fits around university but is also linked to law or the legal profession is more difficult than one might think to obtain. Trust me I have tried and I am a persistent person.

I wanted perhaps graduates who have been in the same boat as me and progressed further forward to maybe guide me on things that I could/should be doing and that how can I make the head of grad rec sit up and pay attention to my TC application form??

The questions on a TC form, as we are all aware, are tedious, hard work and it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint what they are trying to glean from the question in the first place?

Should I paralegal for a few years first? I have work experience in some good firms but are recruiters looking for years on top of a strong degree for someone like me who is at a top 50 university??

It still remains a mystery to me but I do not intend to give up :D

Hi serena1988,

I went to the Open University and have managed to obtain a training contract with a top 20 firm.  Like you I was working to finance my studies, however I was at the even more extreme end, doing 70 hours a week in a call centre, so didn’t have time for any legal work experience or other activities.  I managed to impress the grad recruiters with my hard work, commercial acumen and networking skills.  All of which had been honed by my work experience.  Remember commercial solicitors need to understand their clients businesses so commerciality is invaluable.  Also try talking to the grad recruiters at law fairs because if you can impress them there then they will be looking out for your application.

Good luck

My gosh - congratulations to you!
Thats fantastic to hear…

Can I ask are you good at putting your thoughts down on paper, because I think it is my answers that are stopping me from getting to the assessment days and so on??? The questions look for different skillsbut surely as you had no work experience you had to draw them all from the same job - was this dificult?

I dont want to seem intrusive but did you have strong a-levels and didyou achieve a first or 2.1?

Its great to hear someone that has achieved success!
