Getting sick of it….
Posted: 14 August 2010 02:39 PM

Greetings all,

My name is Antoni and I have recently obtained my LLB diploma at the University of Kent, Canterbury. I have been seeking employment in the legal sector for over two months now. I have been continuously applying to public bodies, law firms, recruitment agencies and banks in the last several months. However, it so happens that the employers always ‘regret to inform me that the application cannot be processed further due to the unprecedented amount of applications received this year’.

Another reason for me to be unsuccessful, it would seem, is that I do not possess sufficient experience. Neverthless, is this not a Catch 22? How am I to gain the experience when no firm wants to take me up? Am I supposed to be involved in work placement and work full-time for no remuneration at all? What if I come from a poor family and I cannot afford to do that? Or I am I supposed to make sandwiches in Subway and do a full-time unpaid work placement as well?

It seems to me that even though I have obtained a very high 2.1. diploma (68,75%) and have done various placements, amongst which a two-month placement in the Canterbury Crown Court, I have no realistic prospects of securing employment in the legal sector. Is it really true that it is more important to know someone than to know something?

I really do hope that you will be able to give me some advice on what to do next. My resources are dwindling and my parents can no longer aid me financially. Is it really normal for a person with a good law diploma to be disregarded by everyone and to work for Subway after all these years of hard work and studies?

Thank you in advance. I am looking forward to your replies and I sincerely hope that you will be able to cheer me up and give me some hope.

Regards,
Antoni.

Hi Antoni

All law students suffer with the issue of needing experience to get experience.  One possible way to get relevant experience is to volunteer with your local Citizens’ Advice Bureau - this will look great on your CV and may open doors for you in terms of getting experience in a law firm.  Although this is unpaid, it is not full-time - you would need to speak to the individual CAB to work out how you could work it around your current job.  It won’t be easy to fulfil both commitments but experience is key to getting a TC / paralegal job.

You say you have ‘various placements’ - perhaps you could speak to someone at your uni careers service (this is often available up to 2 years after you graduate) to ensure that you are making the most out of these placements on your CV.  Also, if you are making a number of applications, ensure that these are quality rather than quantity - you only need one job!

One reason you may be unsuccessful in your applications is that you only have the LLB degree - you don’t say if you’ve done the LPC yet.  Many other applicants will have completed the LPC and therefore have a qualification that makes their application stand out above your application.  Candidates that have completed the LPC will have more knowledge of the practical application of law so are likely to be more attractive to employers.

Good luck - and remember that many other LLB graduates will be working in a non-law job.  You are not alone, and it is only a few months since you graduated.  Just make the most of all your contacts and any opportunities that arise.

There is a middle ground between training contract/legal job and flipping burgers. There are plenty of graduate jobs that aren’t Graduate Jobs through formal schemes but that will harness your skills as a graduate. Try targetting small businesses and local charities. My first job out of uni was with a small, local charity. Because it was so small, there weren’t a lot of staff and I got to turn my hand to things that interested me (e.g. web and graphic design) when the need arose. The job also had some legal content (employment, property, charity law) which I could have made more of if I’d known at the time that I wanted to be a lawyer. I wound up working with two lawyers on different projects and learned a lot of interesting things.

A lot of small businesses don’t formally take on graduates, but they have jobs that need doing and they want motivated people with good communication skills to take on. They may well have legal issues and would welcome someone who could give them a bit of insight (if only into avoiding legal risk).

I should add that my first job was obtained because I “knew someone”—the director of the charity was the cousin of a friend of mine from uni. I ran into the friend at Tescos and happened to mention I was looking for a job. A week later I was being interviewed by his cousin. So definitely use whatever networks you have. I thought I was just whinging about my job search to a friend, but it got me a job!

It’s a rotten time, economically, to be looking for a graduate job. But don’t give up. I’m sure you’ll get something soon.

hi there

are you doing an LPC in the next academic year?

2 months..thats nothing…

took me three years.

If you are fed up after 2 months you will need a lot more patience…

Antoni, it’s been a while since anyone posted on this thread and I just wondered what your situation is now.  Reading your original post brought back memories of my own situation some 20 plus years ago.  It’s always frustrating to be told they are looking for someone with more experience.  The advice already here is good, I hope you were able to benefit from it.
