Greetings all,
My name is Antoni and I have recently obtained my LLB diploma at the University of Kent, Canterbury. I have been seeking employment in the legal sector for over two months now. I have been continuously applying to public bodies, law firms, recruitment agencies and banks in the last several months. However, it so happens that the employers always ‘regret to inform me that the application cannot be processed further due to the unprecedented amount of applications received this year’.
Another reason for me to be unsuccessful, it would seem, is that I do not possess sufficient experience. Neverthless, is this not a Catch 22? How am I to gain the experience when no firm wants to take me up? Am I supposed to be involved in work placement and work full-time for no remuneration at all? What if I come from a poor family and I cannot afford to do that? Or I am I supposed to make sandwiches in Subway and do a full-time unpaid work placement as well?
It seems to me that even though I have obtained a very high 2.1. diploma (68,75%) and have done various placements, amongst which a two-month placement in the Canterbury Crown Court, I have no realistic prospects of securing employment in the legal sector. Is it really true that it is more important to know someone than to know something?
I really do hope that you will be able to give me some advice on what to do next. My resources are dwindling and my parents can no longer aid me financially. Is it really normal for a person with a good law diploma to be disregarded by everyone and to work for Subway after all these years of hard work and studies?
Thank you in advance. I am looking forward to your replies and I sincerely hope that you will be able to cheer me up and give me some hope.
Regards,
Antoni.
