Building my CV or wasted 5k?
Posted: 06 October 2009 10:14 PM

I’m tempted to go for an LLM next year to boost the old CV but I’m a little concerned it might be a waste of money. Does anybody have any first-hand experience of an LLM being the decider in securing a job?

Mmmm, it depends I suppose. If you apply to a corporate firm with an LLM in Human Rights Law then obviously you’ve just wasted 5k. It’s probably best if you get in touch with the people that you hope to employ you. If they say it’d help then go for it. Otherwise, yup, wasted 5k!

ALWAYS A WASTE.

Come on it can’t always be a waste. I think an LLM is a definate advantage - if there are two candiates both with 2.1’s both with good A-levels and all the standard stuff the person with the LLM would stand out I think.

I always got the impression that unless it’s from Oxbridge, then yeah - waste of money.

It may be useful if you get a professional accreditation at the same time such as an LLM incorporating ICSA to become a Company Secretary, or it’s a very specific research LLM when going into a very specific area of law to practice. Otherwise it is generally not a good ROI.

I am currently studying my LLM part-time and chose to do it to perk up my CV, but was worried it was a waste of money.

A couple of months before I started my course I was offered a paralegal job in-house and after I’d accepted my boss confided that it was my willingness to study that got me the job…oh and they are paying for it in full.

Always a waste is rather absolute… and we do not deal in absolutes smile

I am wanting to do Cyber Law at Leeds (LLM) and it is only Leeds that offers this… and to gain an edge on youngsters, it would help me.

I have just spoken to several barristers at a top set in London and they all were in agreement that LLM is:
- not at all a pre-requisite
- is useful, especially, if it is in a relevant niche area (such as, for example, LLM in Competition Law or LLM in Public Law)
- can be a good way of making up for other deficits in your CV, such as a low 2.1 or a university without a name.

From personal experience, if you have a good 2.1 (or just about a 2.1 with good additional academic activities, such as research), you have a good chance to get into King’s College or UCL or even LSE. Some MA programmes even at Oxford will accept a high 2.1 So from a no-name you can become LLM (Lond)! Despite claims by top sets that name of university does not matter, when have you last seen a barrister at top chambers with LLB from South Bank? (Nothing personal against anyone from South Bank LLB, my assessment is purely based on Times Good Uni Guide.) While technically university name might not matter, there just are too many good Oxbridge applicants with firsts and impressive resumes!

So in conclusion - if your LLM is relevant and from a good university - it can make a lot of difference.

It depends a lot on you, where you want to study and what you want to study.

You say you want to boost your CV - if you are trying to cover up poor grades then an LLM is a waste of time - it won’t make firms ignore a 2.2, and you may not have the academic ability needed for an LLM if you have a poor LLB.

If you are doing it becasue you don’t have a TC and you don’t want an empty year on your CV - don’t do the LLM.  Get a job as closely linked to law as you can find, maybe even volunteer for a few months.

Doing an LLM at Oxbridge is better than doing it at an ex-poly (if you decide to do it).

Make sure you are doing it in a relevant area - e.g. if you want a city TC don’t do an LLM in child care.

Mac64 is an exception to the usual LLM process - very few firms will pay for an LLM (whereas many firms pay for the GDL and LPC - surely that’s saying something about the value of an LLM….)

I would say that as you are unsure if it is a waste of money, err on the side of caution, save your money and do something else with it!

I too want to gain an LLM to help get a job in compliance
does anyone have an idea if the LLM from BPP would be worth it or are only LLMs from proper universities beneficial?
