Very poor first year grades!..How can I correct my wrongs?

Hi guys,
Basically, I am a first year law student going to my second year in
October.
I have had a really rough start in terms of my grade for the first year. To
be specific, I failed one of my units (I would have to retake that and it is
capped at 40%), I got a 2;2 in one and a third in the other four. I know
that is an extremely poor performance and I know I have a zero chance of
getting a vacation scheme.
However, I still feel like I can do it and I mean in terms of getting a
first or a high 2;1 ( I know this is really hard to attain but that is my
goal and I feel like that is the only thing that can compensate for my poor
performance in my first year)
My question then is, how bad in reality are these grades which I have
attained in terms of my job prospects.(I would want to be a solicitor)
If I am able to get a first class in the two years I have left or a high
2;1 would that be able to cover the overall effect?
I also currently have an internship with a law firm this summer which I got
before I got my grades. Is that going to be of any benefit? I am hoping and
willing to do anything which can reduce or eliminate the effect of my poor
first year grades in my future career.
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions about what my possible options
are or the best way for me to go about this!
I am sorry for the very long message and its okay if you do not have an
answer to all my questions.
Thanks for giving me a page to write on and looking forward to your reply.
:D

Do you know where you went wrong and what you need to do to improve? It’s all very well talking about wanting to recover to get a good overall degree result, but you need to be able to demonstrate (e.g. in an interview or covering letter) that you know what you did wrong and what concrete steps you are going to take to improve things.

The internship is great and you should definitely make the most of it. I don’t know how long it is for, but if you’re there for a while and have the chance to work with someone in depth, you should definitely try and line them up to give you references in future. References about how you do in an on-the-job setting will definitely be a plus in an academically weak application.

Thanks a lot Beth.

I will be working there for about four to five weeks at least and so this should give me enough time to get a good reference.
I have been using the summer to critically review my performance, where I could have possibly gone wrong and how I could improve.
Despite the fact that the first year does not count towards the actual score I get at the end of the degree would it still be considered an academically weak application if one is made after I get my second year results?(Which will hopefully be a lot better)

Thanks again for your advice.

Hi

I see nobody has answered your last Q - as it is likely that application forms will request all your results then you will still have to put down your first year results, however disappointed you are by them.

However, if your second year results are of a better standard, this will obviously help your application - firstly because of the results themselves and secondly because you can explain that you have learnt from your mistakes in first year, done some reflection and managed to imrpove your grades.  This kind of information could go in a box called ‘Additional information’ or something similar.

It’s all about turning a potential negative into a positive that indicates that you are aware of your weaknesses but have the ability to develop them and to work hard to get the results you want!  Whether it’s a weak application overall will depend on what else you have to offer - your internship will look great on your CV (perhaps use your careers service at uni to work on how to get the most out of it in the application), but any extra curriciulars always look good.

Good luck, and hope your internship is going well !

Hi guys! i’m sort of in the same position haha

I obtained an overall 2.2 in my first year. My module results were:

Tort law: 2.1
Frameworks of the English Legal System: 2.1
Contract Law: 3rd
Public Law: 2.2

Has this really messed up my chances of gaining a training contract or finding any vacation scheme placements?
Some people have told me that a 2.2 average in first year is pathetic and that I should consider different career options. Although I respect that my grades were poor, I’m not prepared to give up just yet as law has always been the biggest goal for me in the future.

If any one can offer any advise on ways to make up for my poor grades I’d be really grateful.
I’m not as fortunate as the original poster of this message in that I don’t have any internships or anything lined up and have no work experience whatsoever so far.

Thanks in advance smile

It is hard to make up for a 2.2 - but by realising early on that this isn’t good enough, at least you have the time to understand where your weaknesses lie and improve on them.  You don’t say why you got these grades - obviously you have an issue with contract law as that is the lowest grade.  Why is that?  Maybe you need a new method of revision, or to start revising earlier, or maybe exams are easier for you than coursework - recognise your weaknesses and work on them. Perhaps speak to the module leader or one of your tutors about it, with the exam paper / coursework there if possible.

In terms of has it affected your chances of getting a TC or vac scheme… well it’s only your first year so you won’t be applying for TCs yet - you need to aim for at least 2.1 marks in everything before the application stage.  An overall 2.2 won’t make getting a TC impossible but it will certainly make it a lot harder and put your CV in the bin (or shredder) immediately at many firms.

It doesn’t look great for a vac scheme, especially due to your lack of work experience so far.  As I said above, in your application for a vac scheme:

‘However, if your second year results are of a better standard, this will obviously help your application - firstly because of the results themselves and secondly because you can explain that you have learnt from your mistakes in first year, done some reflection and managed to improve your grades.  This kind of information could go in a box called Additional information or something similar.’

Vac schemes aren’t the only form of work exp - try usinng any contacts you have for some informal experience, usually at smaller firms.  You may be able to get a role at a local CAB, which looks great on a CV.  It’s important to look outside the formal vac schemes.

Don’t give up just yet - but try to use this summer break to get some kind of relevant legal experience (I know this is easier said than done!),and to reflect on your first year and what you could have done better, without forgetting what you have done well.  Good luck!

Thank-you for the reply.
There is no particular reason for why I didn’t do so well, although starting revision earlier next year is definitely something i’ve learnt! I did find contract harder than the other modules and even during the exam felt maybe I’d failed it.
I’m finding it so hard finding any experience. I know I nee to start somewhere but no where is willing to be the place that gives me the first step.
I’m so determined to do law but really feel like it might be slipping away now due to the let down of my first year grades.

Thanks for all the advise I’ll take it into consideration. I have definitely learnt my lesson and will be putting a lot more effort in my studies during the rest of the course.

Thanks a lot Hopeful. Your advice is really helpful and I appreciate it.
It really is all about moving forward at this point. My internship has been OK. Hopefully I will be a bit more enlightened about the legal practice when I am done.

Hey Lawyergirl! I think you are in a lot better position than I am in terms of first year grades. So you probably should not be too too hard on your self. Just a little worry should suffice.grin

Goodluck to us! :D

haha good luck to us indeed!!

I’ve been trying so hard to find work experience and voluntary work and had NO luck so far!! You’re so lucky you have an internship, enjoy smile

I have a set of results that look like yours but out of 12 applications I got 3 interviews for TC…so all is not lost.
i should say go for it and big up your other achievements.

wow ‘charliefarley’ that’s really good!
did you do anything in particular to make your application stand out? what kind of work experience had you already gained when applying etc?

i tried to apply for voluntary work at my local citizens advice bureau but my application was unsuccessful and i haven’t managed to find any work experience placements so ot really sure how else to improve my CV!

That’s amazing Charliefarley!.. Well-done with that..

It will be highly appreciated if you could share with us the things you had to do, or the grades you had to achieve in order to make your application stand out.

All the very best with your interviews…
