I’ve picked up the rather depressing habit of looking at the university backgrounds of the various members of Chambers. Given that I go to an ex-poly, I’m not exactly encouraged! Does anybody know of any statistics on the percentage of ex-poly candidates that get pupillage?

I’d stop doing such a thing, you won’t find any encouragement doing that! For a bit of solace though, if you’re good enough you’ll get in. Although not exactly meritocracies, most chambers will take you on if you’re good enough regardless of your background

I agree PH. Not that I’m accusing you of being such a person GetmeInn, but I think there are too many people out there these days that simply use it as an excuse.

One my friends at the moment, completely unrelated to law, is simply looking for a job. All he keeps going on about though is how difficult it is and how much he’s tried. Turns out though that he has made 5 applications in the last month! Trying?! If I was in his position I’d be doing that amount per day

Wow, maybe sit a couple of plays out there BVCbud, that was quite the tangent?!

GetmeInn, I don’t remember her name but the woman that was representing Paul McCartney recently (basically a big time big shot barrister) got a third at Portsmouth. Put simply, if you’re persistent enough (and have parents that own a chamber) then you’ll be ok!

Fiona Shackleton? She got her LLB at Exeter.

Thats her Sean, daughter of Sheriff of London I believe as well.
But furthermore you say she represented Paul McCartney, she represented Prince Charles! Surely that is a slightly more impressive case!

Plus both his sons as clients.

She’s not an academic but she’s a fine lawyer. Nothing wrong with that.

Ok, my mistake! Considering I was relying on Fiona Shackleton to be a ‘duffer’ to give me an excuse, are there any other highly successful barristers out there without conventional backgrounds?

Mark McDonald (Human Rights) was bought up on a council estate with a single parent…

The Chairman of the Chancery Bar Association, Michael Todd QC, went to Keele Uni, as well as Michael Mansfield QC. But that was a long time ago.

Keele’s not that bad is it?

Keele is a good university, but it’s not red brick.

Andr, you couldn’t be more discreet in achieving your ‘poster of the month’ status, could you? raspberry
