Student Loan for the GDL
Posted: 09 June 2010 03:56 PM

Hello, don’t think this has been mentioned elsewhere… was wondering if anyone knows if you can get a loan from the student loans company for doing the GDL?

I’ve been over the studentfinance website with a fine-toothed comb and can’t seem to find anything on the subject…

Thanks!

No - it’s a postgrad course which isn’t covered by the student loans company.  Some funding options:
- bank loan (sometimes called a Career Development Loan)
- bank of mum and dad / personals savings
- do the GDL part-time and work part-time
- work for a year then do the GDL
- get a TC from a firm that will pay for the GDL (easier said than done!)

Ah okay, thanks for the info. I really should have figured it for being a pg course.

I’ve heard mention about the Career Development Loan, so will have a further look into that. I am enrolled for the part-time, so am hoping to work and pay as much as I can whilst going along… (2) will be last resource I think, as they’ve just put me through a five-year degree :)

Thanks again!

I did the GDL part time, worked full time and emerged without any debt. It’s possible. Most of my classmates worked full time too.

If you have to go into debt, definitely try to get a career development loan. The interest rates will be much better than your credit card or overdraft (unless you can wangle a student-style interest-free overdraft).

One other option is a scholarship from an Inn of Court. Even if you’re ultimately not interested in going for the Bar, they’re not going to know that if you can present yourself credibly as a future barrister. You’ve probably missed the deadline for autumn 2010, but if you’re part time, there’s always next year. Not many people know about the Inns’ GDL scholarships, so the competition for them is much less intense than for the BVC/BPTC scholarships. It would also look great for your CV whether you go to the Bar or train as a solicitor.

Interest rates on Career Development loans aren’t always that great - about 8% which adds up - especially if a TC doesn’t materialise and repayments begin!

To the above poster - working full time and doing the GDL part time seems like good advice - but what grade did you end up with?  For a lot (probably most) people that would be too much!

Hi Beth, thanks for the advice. One always feels more comfortable knowing someone else has successfully taken the same route!

As mentioned before I will of course attempt to stave off loans if at all possible, but I will of course look into the Career Development Loan as a possibility, depending on the level of interest I suppose!

Thanks again for the advice smile

8% is still very good compared with credit card interest rates (17%+). It does add up, but not as fast as credit card interest rates do (Particularly if you keep spending on your credit card. Because they credit payments against your new purchases first, so they can charge you interest on your whole remaining balance for that month).

I got a commendation on my GDL, which I think was pretty good going, given everything else I had to balance with it. I was not far off a distinction either.

Beth - Good point about interest rates on credit cards.  I don’t think I explained very well what I meant about 8% on Career Development loans - what I meant was that even getting a loan with comparably good interest rates can still leave the borrower in difficulties if he/she doesn’t get a TC in the end.  Another good thing of CD loans over credit card loans is that with most CD loans there is a sort of ‘repayment holiday’ after the end of the GDL / LPC so the borrower has time to look for employment before having to make repayments.

(and well done on your commendation - I worked p/t and did the GDL f/t, getting a distinction overall so if we can do it anyone can!)
