I would like to change my career as I was made redundant last year from RBS
and would very much like to persue an new role within the law as I feel it would be a new chalange for me as I would like to become a Barrista.

However I am 28 and have a house & wife to support so going back to UNI full time would be very difficult for me. Is there any way of a learn while you earn program where you can get on the job
experiance and saliry whilst go to UNI say 2days per week

Hi Paul,

I have been planning on becoming a barrister since I was sixteen and so I have spent a lot of time reading site like this and others to find out as much as I can about becoming a Barrister.

If I am honest I would say you will struggle. Spelling and attention to detail are so important to the work of a barrister… language is the tool of the barrister. You have to have a command over everything you say and write.

In this two paragraph post you have spelt the following incorrectly:

Pursue
Challenge
Barrister!
Experience
Salary

Unless you have AAA at A-level, impeccable English, attention to detail, experience and are very lucky you probably will not be a barrister any time soon.

You could always be another type of lawyer…

Thank you for pointing out my spelling mistakes. I must admit that it is one of my fall down area’s that I do need help in as I am Dyslexic and it did prove a stumbling block for me with Royal Bank. However I am trying to improve upon my spelling and grammer as a whole to improve my prospets. However may I ask what type of Lawyer do you think I should become as at the moment I am trying to gather as much information as I can in the field as I would very much like to be a prosicution Barrista as I feel I could make a positive role in this field and would grately apreceate any input you could give me

Kind Regards
Paul B

Hello Paul.

Although, I think Getmeinn is correct that good English is a pre-requisite for a lawyer there are several options if you aspire to work in law based career, of which becoming a barrister is just one.

Many courses can be taken part time, whilst others course can be taken by via distance learning. http://www.allaboutlaw.co.uk/index.php/courses/

I would suggest this article to explain to you the realities of gaining pupillage - which is the vocational stage of training for aspiring barristers. http://www.allaboutlaw.co.uk/index.php/careers/pupillage/the-realities-of-gaining-pupillage/

As I mentioned there are many other options available. I think it would be worth your while taking a look at our career path and reading about some of the options available. Becoming a solicitor or a barrister is a long and difficult route. http://www.allaboutlaw.co.uk/index.php/pre-uni/career-path/

Once you have some basic knowledge I would take get in touch with the Governments Careers Advisory Service - http://careersadvice.direct.gov.uk/helpandadvice/ for more guidance and advice on which options may be best for you.

I hope that helps,

Best wishes,

Jack

Hi there,

I too am in a similar situation (less the wife & children!) to you. I have been adamant from the start of my decision to change careers for an optical advisor in a high street opticians. This is why I have decided to study with the Open University; there are a wealth of funds and grants available, and as yet I have not paid a single penny in tuition fees (and never will).

I will say however, that studying with the Open University is a challenging experience, and I am sure that one I have the degree it is going to be all the more difficult to find a suitable training contract provider. As many will be looking for graduates from traditional universities.

Best wishes,
Mike.
