It probably depends on your provider. Have you been given copies of past exams? When I was doing my GDL exams I went through all the past papers and made a table of what topics had come up (and with which other topics, if applicable—this was more of an issue in second year exams, IIRC). For example, in tort, the most common topics were:
1) Duty of care
2) Occupiers’ liability
3) Clinical/professional negligence
4) Defamation
5) Nuisance and related topics
etc.
Some of these topics came up more frequently as essay topics than others. (We had to do 3 out of a choice of 7 questions, 6 problem questions and 1 essay question. Most people avoid the essay questions because we didn’t cover them nearly as often as problem questions in class.)
I wouldn’t expect different providers to have exactly the same exam structure since they follow subtly different patterns of topics.
