I completely agree with Aerasay!
Yes a good university is a good start which presumably would have come about from good or otstanding a-levels.
However, if you merely go to uni do nothing and do the bare minimum to achieve a 2.1 then you, in my opinion, are less attractive than someone who went to perhaps a uni ranked 36 or 41or whatever who got a first for working their socks off, held down part time employment and did unpaid work experience and maybe volunteering.
Commercial awareness is a word that is banded around but it is what they are lookng for. A law firm is out to make money - if you are able to determine a clients needs, make money and get repeat work or work via reputation then being able to demonstrate that in you TC and at interview is far better than saying - I went to a top 20 university; give me a job!.
In addition people skills are vital as a solicitor. Book knowledge is fantastic but if you cant converse or empthise with a person/client you ave little hope of becoming a successful solicitor.
There are so many factors to consider outside of the which university box….
