Do firms have ‘no go’ unis?

I know they obviously all love the Oxbridge characters, but what other unis are on law firm’s lists?

If you look at the Times of Guardian list you should be aiming for the top twenty really. Seems as if the uni profiles on this site have the rankings of the law schools anyway so best to have a route through. Don’t go to an average uni though if you want to go to a top employer!

Right, I’ve be the first to give it a bash with a list:

Durham
LSE
Bristol
UCL
KCL
Nottingham
Cardiff

I’ve undoubtedly missed out a lot, but there’s a start at least!

Good start! Although you’ve missed out the following:

Warwick
Sheffield
Manchester
Leeds
Southampton
Edinborough

I’m pretty sure there’s a few more left.

Not bad attempts ladies and gents. I’d have to add the following: Newcastle
Queen Mary, Exeter and Lancaster.

Take a look at which law fairs firms attend for example. It’s a great indicator of which unis they care about and which they don’t.

Not all firms id imagine want Oxbridge as i would like to believe they want a greater spectrum of people in their firms, although obviously a lot of the best legal minds do often come out of Oxbridge due to the level of teaching and also the resources and of course the best people getting the grades to get there in the first place.

Hello all, I am new, recently registered.

I noticed that it has been said Leeds (currently ranked 8th in UK) is a no go? Why is that? I am planning to do an LLM there as Leeds is the only University to offer what I am wanting.

Can this be expanded upon please smile

Shaun,

If you re-read the thread, I think you’ll find that Leeds is on the “top universities list” not the “no-go” list. I think people were speaking largely in terms of LLBs, too. If you are doing a specialist LLM that’s not offered anywhere else, that’s something an employer will take into account.

Obviously these are probably all universities that you need to get the top grades to get into - i.e. the firms that automatically exclude based on your A-levels, so it makes sense peoeple from those unis get TC’s

However your uni is only one of many things a potential employer will look at. I am from a non UK uni, one that isn’t well known outside my country, and I had a VS, 3 TC interviews (at SC firms) and have secured a TC in the area I want to work in, all without my uni disadvantaging me.

Law firms look for more than just people who get into good unis - they look for good all rounders, those with extra curriculars, good grades and part time jobs. Obviously some of those people are from Oxbridge and will have an edge, but if you tick all the right boxes you will eventually get somewhere. People choose unis for all sorts of reasons - where they live, commute etc. Choose the best uni for your circumstances, with the best options on the course for you (i.e. pro bono, years in industry, study abroad as well as rankings) and do your best there. If you enjoy it you will get a better degree and be more likely to do better.
