Degree classification
Posted: 07 March 2010 04:54 PM

I have applied to do a GDL however after reading many posts I am worried I would be wasting my time and money. I have a degree in Arabic but it’s a 2:2. It seems that few training contracts are issued to people with 2:2s.

However the institution to which I have applied for the GDL offers an LLB upgrade after having done the GDL. If I were to take this and got higher than a 2:2, could I use this as my degree classification when applying for training contracts, or would the classification of my first Bachelor’s still need to be considered and would this still result in my finding it hard to get a training contract despite having the LLB as well?

It seems so far in my life, people seem to consider the difference between a 2:1 and a 2:2 the difference between competency and incompetency; eligibility and ineligibility.

Basically, would an LLB upgrade from a GDL (if I got a higher classification than a 2:2) improve my candidature, or would my initial 2:2 forever be a stain on my beginning a law career?

Thanks in advance for replies.

I think the degree in Arabic would put you in good stead. Languages are invaluable. It is true that things will be more difficult with a 2.2 but everyone knows that.

I wouldn’t be put off too much.

Also, I wouldn’t bother with the extra qualification. They will certainly want to know what you got for your first degree.

Have you got any legal work experience? Are you fluent in Arabic?

Thanks for your reply.

I don’t have any legal experience yet, as it is difficult to gain while I am living out of the UK. I currently work in France teaching in a French school, but would move back to the UK for the GDL course, and that is when I was planning to start getting legal work experience.

I am not fluent in Arabic as most of the course concentrated on written translation and not on speaking (Since it is standard Arabic no country in theory speaks this anyway, so it is hard to become orally fluent in standard Arabic especially after learning it for only 4 years).

I know I have a lot of work to do to prove myself, but it’s just what to do to achieve this and compensate for my first degree. I speak French fluently and I am learning Mandarin so hopefully this is a start to some kind of extra filler on my CV.

You speak fluent French. Perfect. That is a selling point. I guess you need to focus on your strengths.

Really, you need to build up your experience as soon as possible.

Law firms, barristers chambers even try some marshalling if you can. Basically, as much as you can. The GDL is very intense so I can’t imagine you will have too much time to get experience whilst you’re doing that.

I would try to get some before you start, even if it is in a French law firm. In fact that could be an advantage.

I hope you get to where you want to be!
