Average entry requirements for city firms?

I’m about to start applying to vac schemes but I’m a little concerned that I’ve only got 300 UCAS points. I’ve had a look at a few firms already saying that 320 is preferred but they will look at all applications. Is that just a polite way of saying that you’ve got no chance if you have 300 UCAS points?

In other words, I’m not keen on spending hours and hours filling in applications if I’m going to get rejected because of 20 UCAS points. Any help would be massively appreciated

If you look at most of their graduate recruitment sites you will see that the average requirements are:

ABB/AAB at level and a 2.1.

I believe you should apply for all the vacation schemes you’re interested in. Don’t let that 20 points hold you down. You never know.

Lower grades may make it a little more difficult, but jermstar is right - don’t let a few ucas points put you off trying.

It is important to remember that firms want more than grades.  If you had say 220 ucas points then your application would probably get little more than a cursory glance, but if you have any of good uni grades, some work experience, life experience, part time job etc then I don’t think firms will turn you down based on points alone.

If of course you do get turned down, don’t just put it down to those 20 points - work out what else is lacking in your application and improve those areas.  You can’t change your A level grades now.

I would call the graduate recruitment people and ask them - they can certainly tell you whether to apply or not. I believe some forms won’t let you fill them in if you don’t have the pre-requisite grades

Just go for it. The first stage of the filtering process, even before the firm concerned paper-sifts applications and short-lists applicants for interview, is when potential applicants don’t have the confidence in themselves even to apply. What you may lack academically can be compensated for in other areas - for example other work experience, sporting achievements, etc, etc.

I completely agree. Just go for it! If you can wow them in other areas, you might just clinch it. There might be others with better grades who don’t necessarily have the life experience that you do.
